Saturday, October 28, 2023: What can we take as Emmaus to help the people of Gaza? (3 Steps)

Saturday, October 28, 2023 What can we do to show our concern for the people of Gaza and Israel and end this war? - 3 Steps:

From Rev Lindsey Bell-Kerr: We can work together around our concerns for the present situation in Gaza.

Members of the Religious Leaders Caucus decided that we could take two first steps.

1. One, to create a statement supporting an immediate ceasefire. Here is the statement that I, with significant support, have developed. I am sure that it could be further perfected, but I ask you to read it only with the question of 'Can I support this?'

Once it is up as a petition,Emmaus member will be able to sign on.

Here is the statement:

From: Members of the Religious Leaders Caucus

North Bay Organizing Project

Sonoma County, California

We, as people of faith and community members committed to justice, collectively mourn the horrific loss of life and the continued violence in Israel and Gaza. In this tense moment, we choose to exercise our collective power to call for de-escalation and demand that our elected officials demonstrate restraint in policy decisions that intensify violence in the region.

We believe that every human being is of sacred worth. We are, and will continue to be, committed to protecting the lives of all civilians, including the 2.2 million people of Gaza, half of whom are children. We condemn any further steps toward violence. We condemn withholding and limiting humanitarian aid. We grieve that our tax dollars are funding the escalation of violence.

Because of this, we join our voices with all, including elected officials and world leaders, who are demanding a bilateral ceasefire now.

(We invite you to join us in calling upon our local elected officials to work for an immediate ceasefire.)

Rev. Lindsey Bell-Kerr

2. We also decided to invite Adam Manasara, from the village of Wadi Fouquin, to come and speak to use about how the situation in Gaza is exacerbating violence in the West Bank as well. He will be joining us in-person on Sunday, November 5th at 6pm at Christ Church, though there will be a Zoom option as well (flyer attached). I ask you to use discretion with how you share this. (For instance, my congregation will be emailing this to our members, but not putting it up on our website.) Please let me know if you will be able to help with security for the event.

3. Announcement for action tomorrow, Sunday, October 29, 2023

from Therese Mugannam. Our Emmaus presence has been requested.

Dear Friends,

Since you are on this list I know I don't have to tell you more about the horrors

taking place in Gaza and the West Bank in Palestine. So let's stand together again on Sunday and support each other as we call to mind and heart the suffering and dying of so many innocents, especially children.

SUNDAY 10/29/23 * Santa Rosa

Rain last Sunday destroyed many of our signs. If you can make a new one,

please do. We will also have paper and markers for you to use on site.

Again, let's remember to focus on why we are there. And let's be alert and

prudent with opposition, if there is any.

In Solidarity,

Therese (for North Coast Coalition for Palestine)
