Saturday, May 18, 2024: "It was not as though there was a Palestinian people. They did not exist" - Golda Meir

(Therese Mughannam in Palestine waits in cross through an Israeli military checkpoint with hundreds of other Palestinians.)

Last night we received an education on the history and suffering of the Palestinian people.

The talk was given by two speakers:

Therese Mughannam is a Palestinian American who has been telling the story of Palestinians for about 30 years in Sonoma County and the Bay Area, drawing from personal family stories and experiences in and about Palestine.

Sam Tuttelman is a retired social worker who has lived in Sonoma County since 1968. He is a second-generation Jewish American who has come to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom and dignity.

The partition of Israel was created by the British and approved by the fledgling United Nations in 1947. The United States under the leadership of Harry Truman voted approval at the UN.

Several slides emphasized the words of the founders of Zionism - the, Jewish nationalist movement that has as its goal the creation and support of a Jewish national state in Palestine which would colonize the country and displace the local population of Palestinians from their homes through any means possible.

The founder of Zionism himself, Theodor Herzl, confided to his diary in 1895 that the Jewish colonists should "gently" expropriate the natives' property and "try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries while denying it any employment in our own country

Similarly, the Belorussian head of the Zionist Organization, Chaim Weizmann, invoked his opposition to Palestinian self-determination in 1930 while supporting it for world Jewry, affirming that the "rights that the Jewish people has been adjudged in Palestine [by the League of Nations Mandate] do not depend on the consent, and cannot be subject to the will, of the majority of its present inhabitants.”

Then and now, Golda Meir has been hailed internationally as an enlightened western stateswoman. Her hateful speech filled with lies such as "It was not as though there was a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country from them. They did not exist," has not diminished her stature in the eyes of western pro-Zionist liberals.

(The discussion at Knox/Thanksghiving)

Israeli restrictions on Palestinians’ movement impose a life of constant uncertainty, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks or make plans, and frustrates the development of a stable economy.

(Sam Tuttleman explains the term "Settler Colonialism" -- Settler-Colonialism is a form of colonization in which outsiders come to land inhabited by Indigenous peoples and claim it as their own [in perpetuity] (Tuck and Yang, 2019).
